Christmas is a special time for most of us.  It is time when the world seems hurried for a month, and then on one glorious day it all slows down.  For a few hours in time it is as if the world shuts down.  For some of us we remember a Savior’s birth.  Others find solace in family, giving and receiving special gifts as a show of love to those whom we care about.  Whatever Christmas is to you, most people agree it is a time to remember loved ones, to show kindness to others, and to find a way to reach out to the less fortunate.  And with the spirit of giving filling the air, it is also a good time to reconnect with friends.

For many people Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace have taken over our lives, helping us find friends and acquaintances that have long been gone from our lives.  What once took time and effort we now do with the flip of a switch.  No longer do we have to try to stay connected, we simply are.

However, during the holiday season, it may be time to rekindle the old ways of doing things, for nostalgia if nothing else.  Maybe it is time to find that pen and paper.  There are a few friends in my life who still write the Christmas letter.  Each year I wait expectantly for their brief overview of the year.  Life written out as if having a chat around the fire.  Memories simply shared and mailed to those who mean the most to them.

Yes, I did say mailed.  I mean, really put in an envelope with a stamp and sent via the post office.  Can you believe it?  Not a e-mailed card, but a real life letter delivered by a real life post man or woman.  There is something special about that.

If you are not a letter writer, consider sending cards.  Find something with a message that you want to send.  Cards that actually reach the heart.  A little note and a signed name can make the recipient truly find the spirit of the Christmas season.

Another great practice for everyone involved is to allow your kids to help in your annual letter or card sending exercise.  Allow them to write a letter of their own, or add their names to the end of your letter.  If you have family that lives far away, it gives them a glimpse into the lives of your little ones, and can be an exciting tradition for your children.

In a world that seems to stay busy all the time, Christmas is a time to sit back, relax and consider the year past and the year to come.  It is a special time that can bring families closer together.  Finding a little extra time to actually send your family and friends cards or letters can bring a measure of excitement to your holiday.  So this year, as the rush hits, take a minute to write to those you love.  It will not only lift your spirits, it will lift theirs also.
